2011-2012 Cyprus part 2

Choirokoitia, the Neolithic Village.
Close to the motorway A1 between Larnaka and Limassol there is the village. This place is a good example of this cultural phase as its apogee, during the course of 7th millennium B.C. This site was discovered in 1934. Now, inside there is a replica of the Neolithic Village.
The fee is Euro1.70 so it is not too much. Inside this complex they found a stone figure which now you can also find on 1 and 2 Cyprus Euro coins.

Kourion
Another UNESCO complex, which is near Limassol, on the road B6.According to the Greek historian, the city was founded by the Argives.
The theatre was built in the 2nd century B.C and it was enlarged to its present size in about 200 A.D. It was also adapted to accommodate gladiator games.
The entrance fee is Euro 1.70 and inside there is a huge parking place for cars. We haven’t got enough time to spend in this place but for sure you need to arrange more than 1 hour.

Polis – Baths of Aphrodite
Near Polis there is Akamas headland, where according to the legend are The Aphrodite Baths. That was an excellent idea to leave a car and go for a walk. All day in the car with small brakes is very exhausting. For myself the place wasn’t spectacular but the area around was picturesque. The path is very short and well marked. On the way back we chose a different way and we found goats which regardless for us ate leaves from trees.

Mountain way to the Kykkos Monastery
The day was not so good but our plan was to go to the Kykkos Monastery. We chose a mountain way and it was a good idea. We stopped almost in every village.

The area was so colourful and picturesque. In half way we had a small break close to a mouflons reserve. Now, in Cyprus, there are around 3000 those animals. You can also find  mouflons on 1,2 and 5 Cyprus Euro cents.

Finally we arrived to Kykkos Monastery where is a free entrance. This monastery was founded around the end of 11th century. Inside, monks have still lived.
AlphaInterior of the Monastery and the cloisters around a central courtyard are decorated with beautiful icons and wall paintings with scenes from the lives of the saints.

Nicosia
The last day we spent in Nicosia. Unfortunately, we didn’t have good weather, so the walk wasn’t so comfortable. Nicosia is a city which is split between Cyprus and Turkey. In the middle of the city there is a border which you can cross. The Turkish side is much more dirty but the Cyprus side wasn’t so clear too. We parked our car close to the border wall because all parking places were full or too expensive for us. Inside the city there are many abandoned houses. The old city is surrounded by the Venetian wall and inside there is around 50 churches.
